Carlos Alberto Parreira Is Bafana Bafana Coach
23 October 2009
The South African Football Association (SAFA) has appointed Carlos Alberto Parreira as the coach of Bafana Bafana. Parreira's contract with SAFA runs through to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The announcement was made during the National Executive Committee meeting on Friday (23 October).
The Brazilian is expected in the country in the next few days. Parreira will work alongside his former assistants again, Pitso Mosimane and Jairo Leal. An additional South African coach will be roped in as the third assistant. The name of the new assistant coach will be announced in due course.
Addressing the media after the announcement, SAFA President Kirsten Nematandani said SAFA would have loved to have a South African at the helm of Bafana Bafana, but due to time constraints the Association has gone for more experience and someone ready to do the job.
“It was our wish to have a local person coach the national team Bafana Bafana, but we have only eight months to go to the World Cup and there is no time for experimenting, so we went for experience. Also it is Parreira's programme that the national team is following, so it's only fair and wise that he returns to continue with it. But the meeting has agreed in principle that the next Bafana Bafana coach after the World Cup will be one of our own,”said Nematandani.
Parreira will not waste any time in getting down to business as he has to prepare for the international friendly matches against Japan and Jamaica on the 14th and 17th of next month.
